Retainers usually cost the equivalent of 100 to 600 US dollars per arch depending on the type, the country and whether scans and fitting are included. They are the smallest part of an orthodontic treatment bill and the most important investment in keeping the result. This guide breaks down what each type of retainer typically costs worldwide, why prices vary and what to plan for across a lifetime of replacements.

Retainer types and what they cost

Three main types are used worldwide. Each has a different price, lifespan and feel.

  • Clear plastic retainers. Thin transparent trays, similar in look to Invisalign. Typically 100 to 400 US dollars per arch. Lifespan 1 to 3 years.
  • Hawley retainers. Acrylic plate with a metal wire across the front teeth. Typically 150 to 500 US dollars per arch. Lifespan 5 to 10 years.
  • Permanent bonded retainers. A thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Typically 200 to 600 US dollars per arch fitted. Lifespan often many years.

Typical retainer prices by country

Prices below are for a single clear retainer per arch, fitted by a clinic in 2026. Hawley and permanent retainers usually sit at the higher end of these ranges or slightly above.

  • United States: 100 to 400 USD per arch.
  • Canada: 150 to 450 CAD per arch.
  • United Kingdom: 100 to 300 GBP per arch.
  • Ireland: 120 to 350 EUR per arch.
  • Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium: 120 to 400 EUR per arch.
  • Spain, Portugal, Italy: 100 to 300 EUR per arch.
  • Nordics: 1,200 to 3,500 SEK or NOK per arch.
  • Australia: 200 to 500 AUD per arch.
  • New Zealand: 250 to 550 NZD per arch.
  • United Arab Emirates: 600 to 1,500 AED per arch.
  • Singapore: 200 to 500 SGD per arch.
  • Hong Kong: 1,500 to 3,500 HKD per arch.
  • South Africa: 1,500 to 4,500 ZAR per arch.
  • India: 4,000 to 12,000 INR per arch.
  • Mexico: 1,500 to 4,500 MXN per arch.
  • Brazil: 400 to 1,200 BRL per arch.

What drives the price

  • Retainer type. Permanent bonded retainers take more chair time to fit, so they cost more in clinic.
  • Scans and impressions. A new digital scan often adds 50 to 150 in local currency. Patients with existing scans on file may avoid this.
  • Clinic and country. Specialist orthodontists usually charge more than general dentists. Major cities cost more than smaller towns.
  • Number of arches. Most patients need both upper and lower, doubling the cost.
  • Postal aligner companies. Mail in clear retainers from direct to consumer brands are cheaper per set but skip the in person check.

Is the first set included in my treatment?

Sometimes. Many orthodontists include the first set of clear or Hawley retainers in the quoted price of braces or Invisalign. Others charge separately at the end. The contract you sign at the start should answer this clearly. If it does not, ask in writing before paying any deposit.

Replacement costs

Retainers need to be replaced whenever they crack, warp or stop fitting. Plan for this from day one.

  • Clear retainer replacement: usually the same price as the original, sometimes discounted if ordered together.
  • Hawley retainer replacement: similar to the original price. Some clinics can repair a broken wire for less.
  • Permanent retainer repair: 50 to 250 in local currency for a single re bond. A full replacement wire is usually 200 to 600.
  • Lost retainer at school or in transit: a replacement scan and tray together can take 2 to 4 weeks. Wearing a back up retainer during the gap prevents teeth from drifting.

Lifetime cost planning

Retainers are a long term commitment because teeth drift throughout life. A realistic lifetime budget for an adult who finishes orthodontic treatment in their 20s:

  • Clear retainers replaced every 2 years for 50 years: roughly 2,500 to 10,000 in local currency in total.
  • Hawley retainers replaced every 8 years: roughly 750 to 3,000 in total.
  • Permanent retainer fitted once with occasional re bonds: roughly 400 to 1,500 in total, plus the cost of a back up clear retainer to wear if the wire fails.

Many patients combine a permanent retainer behind the front teeth with a clear night time retainer that covers all teeth, which gives belt and braces protection.

How insurance and healthcare systems treat retainers

  • United States: employer dental plans often bundle retainers into the orthodontic lifetime benefit. After that cap, replacements are out of pocket. HSA and FSA accounts cover retainers.
  • Canada: private dental plans often include retainers in the orthodontic benefit.
  • United Kingdom: NHS orthodontic treatment for under 18s includes the first set of retainers. Replacements are private.
  • EU countries: first set often included with private treatment. Replacements usually self funded.
  • Australia: private health extras often pay a portion of retainers, subject to annual limits.
  • Asia and the Middle East: retainers are usually a separate line item on the bill. Always check your insurance and the quote.

Honest ways to keep retainer costs down

  • Order an extra clear retainer at the end of treatment while you are already being scanned. The marginal cost is small.
  • Treat your retainer well. Our cleaning guide covers daily and weekly routines that double the lifespan of a clear retainer.
  • Keep the case habit. Most lost retainers end up wrapped in a napkin and thrown out by accident.
  • Save your dental scan files if your clinic allows. They can speed up future replacements.
  • Ask whether a teaching hospital in your area offers supervised retainer fitting at a lower fee.

What to ask before you pay

  • Which type of retainer are you recommending, and why?
  • Is the first set included in my treatment fee?
  • How much is a replacement, and how quickly can you make one?
  • Do you charge for repairs to a permanent retainer wire?
  • How often do you want to see me to check the fit and the gum health around a fixed retainer?

Bottom line

Retainers cost the equivalent of 100 to 600 US dollars per arch worldwide, depending on the type, country and clinic. The lifetime cost is more meaningful than the first quote because retainers protect a much larger orthodontic investment. Budget for replacements, look after the trays or wires you have and keep wearing them on the schedule your orthodontist set. Skipping retainers is the most expensive mistake an orthodontic patient can make.
